RCN North West Region

Regional board

The RCN North West board is the democratically-elected governing body of the RCN in the North West. The board works with the regional director to set the RCN's regional strategic objectives and priorities and advance the RCN's aims and objectives, namely to:

  • promote the art and science of nursing and the better education and training of nurses and their efficiency in the profession of nursing
  • promote the advancement of nursing as a profession in all or any of its branches
  • promote the professional standing and interests of members of the nursing profession
  • assist nurses who, by reason of adversity, ill health or otherwise are in need of assistance of some nature.

Board meetings

The board meets four times a year and board members hold seats to represent RCN Branches, fields of practice or national committees. The board meet four times each year.  During 2016, board meetings will be held at the RCN regional office, Bolton on:

  • 26 May
  • 19 July
  • 5 October

North West Council members

RCN Council is the organisation's governing body, responsible for setting the RCN's priorities, objectives and policies. The region's current representative on Council are:

  • Dave Dawes (4 year term to 2020): Dave has over 25 years' experience in hospital and community care in both the NHS and in the independent sector. He has been an accredited RCN steward since 1992 and first became a member of the RCN North West Board in 2002. From 2003 to 2005 Dave served on the RCN Agenda Committee, and he is public relations officer for his local branch. he is a visiting lecturer at the Liverpool John Moores University and he is Director of Community Health Innovation in Manchester.
  • Professor Janet Marsden FRCN (2 year term to 2018): Janet has been a nurse for over 30 years and has spent her career specialising in ophthalmology and emergency care. Since the 1990's she has worked at Manchester Metropolitan University, now as a Professor, leading and developing programmes for both nurses and medics. Janet has been Chair of the RCN's ophthalmic nursing forum, member of the RCN North West Board, branch official and previously served on Council. She was awarded the RCN Fellowship in 2010.
