Running a car is a necessity for many people. But the cost of comprehensive cover and car maintenance can sometimes take you by surprise.

We asked our corporate partner Liverpool Victoria General Insurance (LV=) what you need to consider if you want to cut back on car costs.

Make the most of your RCN membership discount

RCN members get a 5% exclusive discount* on LV= Car insurance, providing one of the highest quality offerings on the market. (*RCN member discount versus general public prices on LV.com and through the call centre.)

Reduce your mileage

Even if you’re a great driver, the more you drive, the higher the chance you’ll be involved in an accident. So, while it’s likely that there will be times when driving is essential, if you’re able to trim the number of miles you clock up each year, you could make savings on the cost of your insurance.

Bundle your policies

If you have more than one car in your household, consider insuring them all under one policy. With LV= you can insure up to six cars and 12 drivers under one policy and receive your RCN member discount.

You can add all cars at the same time, schedule some for later or add them in afterwards. Plus, you can choose the cover level and specific optional extras you’d like for each car.

Check your existing policy

Make sure you think about details, such as adding another driver or ensuring your job details are correct, when you get your quote.

Make sure your policy is up to date

Once you have taken out an insurance policy, it’s important you tell your insurer about any changes. It’s not just your vehicle you need to consider. Have you changed your name, address or registration plate recently? If you’ve changed where your vehicle is kept, that could have an impact on your premium too.

Give your car some TLC

Prevention is cheaper than cure. So, make the time for the simple car maintenance jobs: check the condition, tread and pressure of your tyres every fortnight. Ensure your oil and screen wash levels are topped up; and regularly test all your lights.

Use professionals where required

Where necessary, get major problems seen to promptly by a professional mechanic.

Act quickly if you have a chipped windscreen

If you spot a chip, get it repaired as soon as possible to save time, money and an environmental impact in the long run. Repairing a windscreen chip under your LV= policy only costs you £20, whereas to replace it could cost you between £95 and £190, depending on your vehicle.

‘Making a claim took just two weeks’

I was looking for a reliable and affordable insurance policy that would provide comprehensive coverage and peace of mind.

The process was smooth and straightforward. The team was able to explain clearly, as appeared very knowledgeable, and guided me through each step.

I feel much more secure knowing I have coverage in place. It gives me confidence that I’m protected if anything unexpected happens.

Earlier this year, I had to make a claim after an accident, and the service from LV was excellent from start to finish. They quickly arranged and delivered a courtesy car, and once it was confirmed that my car was a write-off, the claim was settled promptly.

We received the cheque within days of accepting the offer. The process took just about two weeks, which really helped us purchase a new vehicle without delay. LV was very helpful in transferring our policy to the new car seamlessly.

During what was a very stressful time, LV made the entire process much easier with their efficiency and support.

Absolutely highly recommended. Based on the excellent service and clear communication I received, I would recommend your company to others. The team is very efficient and acts promptly in getting back to me each time, as I have been with your company for a very long time.

Driving tips for sunnier days

Car driving down a clear road on a sunny day

Warmer, sunnier days can still pose hazards on the roads, so make sure you stay safe.

  • Check fuel levels before long trips, and that tyre tread depth is adequate.
  • Manage glare with appropriate sun visors and sunglasses.
  • Prevent tiredness by ensuring proper rest, planning breaks, and avoiding driving during low alertness hours.
  • Stay hydrated by keeping water in the car, especially during hot weather.
  • Avoid leaving food or electronics in the car, as they can overheat or pose risks.
  • Never leave children or pets unattended in a hot vehicle, as temperatures can quickly become dangerous.
