This award recognises those who have made an outstanding contribution to the care of children or young people or the care of mothers-to-be and new parents.

Nominated for its innovative, high-quality care for school-aged children and young people, the Tayside team operates a comprehensive care model, supporting children in ten priority areas, including mental health, child protection, care-experienced youth, homelessness, substance misuse, sexual health, and domestic abuse. Their work is described as going beyond traditional school nursing, ensuring vulnerable children receive the best care, protection, and support. By working holistically, and delivering trauma informed care, they strive to address adverse childhood experiences and ensure children have access to dental care, healthcare support, and family-focused interventions.

The judges praised the team’s goal of changing the perception of their role from the historic ‘Nit Nurse’ into a masters level role, with skilled nursing staff leading practice and benchmarking transformative practice. Head judge, Margaux Lobban, said: “We were particularly impressed how the leaders within the team are encouraging and enabling staff to progress in their qualifications to assist in the ongoing development and improvement of the service they deliver. By engaging with their service users and families in the design of services, the team are able to ensure the school nursing service is truly meeting the needs of the children they work with.”

Commenting on the team’s win, Colin Poolman, RCN Scotland Executive Director, said: “Ensuring children have the best start in life is fundamental to their future health and wellbeing. The Tayside School Nursing Service is at the forefront of this, championing the children they care for and ensuring a healthier future for them. Huge congratulations and long may their work continue.”

Congratulations also go to runner up the Health for All Nursing Team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and our highly commended Best Start Midwifery Leadership Team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
