This award recognises those who have made an outstanding contribution to the care of children or young people or the care of mothers-to-be and new parents.

Nominated for their exceptional leadership, innovation, and compassion in delivering safe, person-centred care to children, young people, and families, the team maintain a 99% appointment offer rate within 28 days. Using quality improvement methodology, and self-referral QR codes, they have increased accessibility and empowered young people to shape service delivery. Focusing on key priorities including mental health, sexual health, and child protection, they collaborate closely with education, social work, CAMHS, and third-sector partners to reduce health inequalities. Through trauma-informed, inclusive practice, robust data monitoring, and a culture of shared learning, the team has fostered innovation and excellence, making them a model for school nursing across Scotland.

The judges praised the team’s progressive, prevention focused practice, embracing the diversity of nursing roles and training, which improves access, reduces inequalities and delivers meaningful public health impact for children and young people and their families. Head judge, Margaux Lobban, said: “We were particularly impressed with how they have implemented accessible services utilising QR codes for self-referral, enabling young people to seek timely, confidential support.”

Commenting on the team’s win, Colin Poolman, RCN Scotland Executive Director, said: “Future health outcomes are fundamentally reliant on good health and care being delivered during the early years to give children the best start in life. The Fife School Nursing Service clearly demonstrates the impact that the service has within its community today. Huge congratulations and long may their work continue.”

Congratulations also go to runner up Caroline Porter, Diana Children’s Nurse with Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS), and our highly commended Nicky Bridges, former Associate Director for Outreach Services also from CHAS.
