This award, sponsored by Anderson Strathern, aims to recognise an exceptional clinical leader who, by inspiring others, has made a significant difference to service delivery and quality of care.

Nominated for transforming sexual health and HIV services through innovative, patient-centred care and strategic service redesign, Mike has modernised STI diagnosis, treatment, and partner notification pathways. His work to introduce digital booking systems, online results management and pharmacy treatment vouchers has earned national recognition. Mike also led the rollout of DoxyPEP, reintroduced STIF training, and supervised non-medical prescribers, strengthening workforce development and professional satisfaction. His initiatives have streamlined services, increased clinical capacity, and improved integration across health and social care partners.

The judges praised Mike for being an advocate for nursing in sexual health services and the impact they can make. Head Judge, Eileen McKenna, said: “We were particularly impressed with Mike’s passion for shared decision making and how he supports his team to deliver the highest quality care through empowering them to share ideas for improvement. His leadership in developing training and education to address gaps in team knowledge when supporting patients with HIV really stood out as demonstrating his commitment to his team and the patients they care for.”

Congratulating Mike on his win, Colin Poolman, RCN Scotland Executive Director, said: “By inspiring and motivating staff, a good nursing leader can advocate for both patients and staff. It was evident from Mike’s nomination that he is a champion for his team and his area of practice. Truly an inspirational nurse leader.”

Congratulations also go to runner up Fiona Clark, Parkinson's Specialist Nurse in NHS Tayside, and our highly commended Caroline Reid, Clinical Nurse Manager at the Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital in NHS Grampian.
