Sponsored by Glasgow Caledonian University, the award recognises those who have shown exceptional promise during their professional education or practice placement, deserving recognition for exceptional achievement during their studies.
Nominated for his extraordinary resilience, compassion, and commitment during his studies, Grant made a bold career change to pursue nursing during the COVID-19 pandemic, all while caring for his disabled parents. As a student, Grant stood out for his academic excellence and dedication in clinical placements, leading to him securing a competitive Erasmus+ scholarship to Lithuania. Despite profound personal losses during his studies, Grant focussed on his studies and placements, receiving glowing feedback and completing his degree with merit. His nominator praised Grant for exemplifying courage, empathy, and excellence.
The judges praised Grant’s honesty, compassion, and empathy which he evidenced throughout his student journey, and also his willingness to have open conversations to raise concerns. Head judge, Jacqui Neil, said: “Grant showed a real passion for challenging himself, being open, and looking at everything as a learning opportunity. He really showed what a student nurse can bring to the nursing team and evidenced a clear understanding of the role of a nurse as an advocate for patients.”
Celebrating Grant’s win, Colin Poolman, RCN Scotland Executive Director said: “Nursing students are the future of the profession, and it takes years of hard work and dedication to become a registered nurse. Grant’s story truly exemplifies the resilience needed to become a great nurse and he deserves the recognition the award gives him. I wish him all the best in his nursing career and I’m sure he will do great things.”
Congratulations also go to our runner up John Langan, a student at the Open University, and our highly commended Fionnadh Ratchford, a 3rd year student from the University West of Scotland.
