Health visiting support worker praised at national awards
Lynn Melville, a Health Care Support Worker with the Airdrie Health Visiting Team in NHS Lanarkshire, was announced as the 2026 Nursing Support Worker of the Year at the grand RCN Scotland Nurse of the Year Awards ceremony tonight (30 April 2026).

This award recognises those who have made an outstanding contribution to the care of patients or residents in their nursing support worker role.
Her nominator described Lynn as an exceptional Health Care Support Worker in Airdrie’s health visiting service whose compassion, dedication, and innovation have transformed the lives of vulnerable families. She provides holistic, person-centred support, addressing practical, emotional, and social needs through initiatives like sleep guidance, home-based Bookbug sessions, and partnerships with local charities. Her work empowers parents, strengthens family resilience, and improves wellbeing, while also inspiring and mentoring colleagues to enhance team confidence and care standards. Lynn’s creativity, empathy, and tireless commitment have made a lasting, life-changing impact on families and the wider health visiting service.
The judges praised Lynn’s work with vulnerable families and her commitment to personal development. Having completed sleep action training, she is now the team’s ‘sleep guru, providing guidance and practical strategies to improve children’s sleep. Head Judge, Eileen McKenna, said: “We were particularly impressed by Lynn’s recognition that everyone has different needs, understanding that each family is individual and adapting her approach depending on the family’s needs.”
Celebrating Lynn’s win, Colin Poolman, RCN Scotland Executive Director said: “Nursing support workers are a vital and valued part of the nursing team. Lynn’s empathy and compassion shone through in her nomination and throughout the judging process, and it is evident she is a valued member of the health visiting team. Her work to give vulnerable families a voice is commendable and makes her a truly deserving winner.”
