The role of RCN safety reps

Ensuring safe workplaces for members

As an RCN safety rep, you'll represent the health and safety interests of members at work. Find out more about the role here.

As an RCN safety representative, you will work with employers to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for RCN members.

With full support of the RCN, you will:

  • influence the employer to work towards a healthy and safe environment, and negotiate and represent the health and safety interests of RCN members at work
  • carry out safety inspections and contribute to risk assessments in the workplace
  • represent RCN members on matters related to workplace accidents and incidents
  • alert work colleagues to the risks and their obligations for health and safety for themselves and others
  • work jointly with employers, to ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation.

Learning and development

As a newly recruited safety representative, you'll start by attending a foundation module. On successful completion you will move on to the development module which prepares you for your role as an RCN safety rep.

Once you’ve completed your foundation and development modules you will be eligible to attend continuing learning and development workshops and events for reps to maintain and develop your skills.

Become a rep

If you are interested in becoming a safety rep, see How to become an RCN rep for information on how to apply.

As a safety rep, I've taken a central role to highlight the increasing frequency of attacks
on nurses. I've been empowered to take policy to the highest level, whilst also ensuring
the RCN has a vocal ambassador on a local level. I'm proud to be able to have a sincere and
lasting impact on working practices.
