As we prepare for Congress 2023 I wanted to take a bit of time to reflect on this year's congress meeting and think a little about the future.
2022 was my first year attending congress and I will be honest, I was a little apprehensive. Not just because this was my first face to face meeting in 2 years but I also didn't know what to really expect as a new voting member, however, I can honestly say that there was no need for my concern.
I came away from congress feeling empowered and proud to be part of a community that supports so many voices and that my voting membership, however small, will have perhaps made a difference to debates that were highlighted this year. Maybe next year I will be brave enough to take the stand and have my say!
My particular highlights were of course, showcasing Fertility Care in 2022 and I hope that eventually we may be able to bring this very young but fast developing area of medicine to the forefront as it is still often classed as a taboo subject among many people but impacts on so many lives. Education in this area is paramount and I can only hope that I can use my position as a fertility forum committee member to help the development of our future fertility nurses.
I especially enjoyed the talks relating to leadership. As well as fertility, an area that I am keen to develop further are my leadership skills so the theme of leadership and management, for me, was a particular area of interest.
I also found keynote speaker Michael Rosen’s talk extremely moving and it highlighted to me not just the fact that Covid has had a massive impact on us all but that no matter what area of nursing you work in, whether it is private or NHS, nurses make a huge impact on patient lives and I think it’s important to remember this especially during our current nursing climate where nurses have sadly been taken massively for granted and industrial action looms.
This brings me to think about 2023 and what we will be debating next year. I hope that what comes will be positive, I hope that nurses will be listened to and the nursing voices over the next couple of months and beyond will be heard.
We have discussed some hard hitting topics this year and I can imagine next year will be the same, however congress is that place where we can talk about these topics, safe in the knowledge that we are part of a community that will support each other.
I look forward to 2023 and I encourage my fellow nurses to attend and have your say.
