Reflections on the annual Fertility 2023 conference

Francesca Steyn 22 Feb 2023

Reflections on attendance at a national fertility conference and the contributions from fertility nurses at the conference.

Fertility conference
I wanted to reflect on my attendance at one of the major fertility conferences so far this year and how this conference helps to shape fertility nurse education and supports career development. Fertility 2023 took place in Belfast in early January and this is an annual event hosted by some of the professional fertility societies, where the UK fertility sector comes together to present their work, share best practice and network.

This year saw some fantastic presentations and posters from fertility nurses and midwives across the UK and Ireland which included the management of high risk cases in the fertility setting, our RCN publication on the transition from fertility to maternity care, miscarriage diagnosis and management, a nurse led AMH testing and results delivery pathway, a nurse led embryo transfer service and using a remote platform to assess patients with fertility problems.

Laura Carter-Penman who is the chair of the Senior Infertility Nurses group was also presented with the British Fertility Society nursing prize for her presentation on an app based semen analysis care pathway. This conference is an excellent forum for nurses and midwives across the country who are working in fertility care to learn, network, share and be involved in fertility nursing and wider MDT discussions. There is a huge amount of support for nurses to submit abstracts at this meeting and present on their work and areas of interest and specialisms. It was fantastic to attend alongside committee member Anne Howard and present at the event on behalf of the fertility nursing forum. It was also great to speak with so many fertility nursing staff who are keen to progress and develop their fertility nursing careers and highlight some of our forum publications that will support them along the way.

We hope to continue to attend this event and encourage fertility nurses and midwives throughout the UK to attend and showcase their work. You can find out more information at www.fertilityconference.org.
