For Dying Matters Week 2024, we look at the past, present, and future of end-of-life care.
For Dying Matters week 2024, we look at the past, present and future of end-of-life care. From the holistic view of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual pain developed by Cicely Saunders in 1964 to the true modern-day story of Lesley and her husband Seth Goodburn who died just 33 days after diagnosis with pancreatic cancer, we explore the importance of compassionate, patient and family-centred care.
Speakers
David Clark is the biographer of Cicely Saunders and has written extensively on the history and development of palliative care. In 2022 his play, Cicely and David was performed to sell-out audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe. David will describe how the play came about and then introduce a filmed scene from the Edinburgh production, showing how in 1948, Cicely and a dying Polish patient exiled from his home, begin to lay out the principles of the modern hospice approach.Lesley Goodburn Homeward Bound tells the true story of Lesley and her husband Seth Goodburn who at 49 years old, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer following a short history of feeling unwell, and died just 33 days after diagnosis. Seth's Story provides an opportunity for health and social care professionals in hospitals, trusts and universities to reflect on the importance of compassionate person- and family-centred care at the end of life.
