Nurses in the early twentieth century were told to practice “unquestioning loyalty and obedience” to their “superior officers” and the hospitals they worked in.
But what happened to those nurses who raised concerns about such things as safety, conditions or staffing? An expert panel explores landmark events in the history of whistleblowing, from early trade unions to the Francis Report. The event will bring us up to date with a look at recent research being undertaken at Cardiff University and RCN work on safe staffing policy.
Chaired by Professor Ruth Harris (Professor of Health Care for Older Adults, Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, King’s College London. Chair of the RCN Research Society), talks include:
- Nurse Heroes: A History of Blowing the Whistle - Chris Hart (Historian of nursing unions and Independent Nurse Consultant)
- 'Through a glass, darkly': contested views of speaking up in the NHS following the introduction of the ‘guardian’ role - Professor Aled Jones (Professor: Patient Safety & Healthcare Quality, Cardiff University)
- Raising concerns on the front line: insights from an individual and research perspective. - Professor Daniel Kelly FRCN (Royal College of Nursing Chair of Nursing Research, School of Healthcare Sciences, Cardiff University)
