In between lockdowns over the last two years, 22 of the RCN library’s historic nursing journals have been digitised and are now online and fully searchable. Curious about theatre nursing see ‘Gown and Gloves’ from the late 1970’s. Want to know about nursing in China in the 1920’s take a look at The Quarterly Journal of Chinese Nurses. Alongside these rare titles you can now search and read through Nursing Times from its first issue all the way up to 1986.
Whilst the articles, letters and photographs are fascinating as they chart the development of nursing through such titles as the Australian Bush Nursing Journal to The Zambia Nurse. The advertisements they contain provide another dimension as they give unique insight into the history of patent medicines, uniforms, and social and medical history.
This online access has been made possible through a collaboration with Cengage Gale. This collection of journals is now available through Gale Primary Sources Women’s Studies Archive and their Female Forerunners Worldwide section for RCN members.
Take a look and see what you discover.
