Adventures of the Gastro Forum at RCN Congress 2022

Alison Ball 21 Jul 2022

The Gastrointestinal Nursing Forum Committee and Forum members travelled to Glasgow last month for an exciting RCN Congress 2022. It was a busy week, and the Forum had a excellent profile. The Team were taking part in debates, representing our 4,000+ members, promoting Forum activity and facilitating learning & wellbeing events. We now look forward to the next year: recruiting to our wonderful Steering Committee, collaborating on new and exciting projects and of course heading to Brighton in 2023. Read on....we would be delighted for you to come and join us!

The RCN Gastro Forum were very active at the recent RCN Congress in Glasgow and were fortunate to have two fringe events during the meeting, The first was an evening session led by Fi Hibberts on writing for publication, which was a practical workshop for members who were encouraged to come together, share their knowledge and to get writing! The Forum combined their skills to provide delegates with top tips and advice for developing skills and publishing their work. There were three speakers from the Forum, one attending via video link. This was a very popular event - standing room only!  and also well attended via Hopin, where members who couldn’t be there in person could share the session and be able to contribute. The delegates shared experiences and advice as well as benefiting from having a panel of experts on hand to share knowledge with and network.

The second event was also led by Fi Hibberts and was entitled 'Psychological Safety: What it is and why you need it?'. This session was equally popular with delegates and focused on the concept of psychological safety where people are encouraged to speak up, speak out and not be afraid of the outcomes. The event focused on developing cultures where staff can confidently ask for help, raise concerns in safety and where innovation and learning can flourish. This was then linked to how this can affect patient care, the research that underpins it, and how nurses can benefit from it as well as how to develop and nurture this within a team. the delegates enjoyed this session so much that it overran and the session had to close with delegates still wanting more! it was encouraging to be able to share work and learning with new friends and colleagues and to allow delegates the opportunity to develop themselves and to explore new concepts for personal development.

The Forum also manned the 'Get Involved' Forum stand on Wednesday lunchtime where we were available to answer questions from members, introduce potential new members and to promote the Gastro Forum. In addition to this we also attended the 'Meet my RCN Forum at the world cafe on the Tuesday evening where we shared a table with the Bladder and Bowel Forum and the Peri-operatve Forum. Over coffee and cake we met potential new members and promoted the role of the Forum, showcasing our Strategy of 'Listening. Learning & Leading'. We are now recruiting for new steering committee members - apply here!

We attended all the debates and participated in the voting and discussion that took place during the week and had an amazing time meeting old friends - and making new ones. There was also a very active events programme in the evenings, and were especially proud to support our previous Chair Fi Hibberts when she was presented with the RCN Award of Merit - very well deserved. Congress 22 was an exceptional week - and we are already making plans for next year for Brighton 2023 - get in touch, come along and join us!
