This symposium will provide the latest updates and developments on key issues in acute care nursing to enhance your professional practice and improve patient outcomes.
Delegates will be able to tailor their day by attending their preferred break-out sessions. There will be plenty of opportunities to pose questions to our expert speakers and network with fellow delegates during the breaks.

Target audience

Session overview: The Clinical and Medical Affairs team at Teleflex supports the safe and effective use of our vascular access devices through engaging and immersive procedural education. Vascular access, as a speciality, is often taken for granted however selection of the right device, for the right patient, at the right time can positively impact user experience and patient outcomes. This session, will focus on the effective use of ultrasound within vascular access, aims to offer an introduction to the theory which can support this aim.
Delegates will come away with a greater understanding of device selection, vessel health preservation and ultrasound skills.

Nicola Ranger, Director of Nursing, RCN
Talk: The nursing workforce
Professor Nicola Ranger joined the RCN in December 2022. She was previously Chief Nurse and Executive Director of Midwifery at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in London. Before that, she held Chief Nurse posts at both Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust and Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust.
She has also held a number of senior nursing roles at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust. Earlier in her career, she worked at America’s George Washington University Hospital in Washington and at Mount Sinai Medical Centre in New York.
Thomas Whitelaw, Honorary Master Open University for Health, Social Care and Policy | National Lead Person Centred Voices, Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland (the ALLIANCE)
Talk: You make a difference (intelligent kindness)
Abstract: This session, hosted by Tommy Whitelaw National Lead from the ALLIANCE's Person centred Voices project, encourages individuals across all roles to promote person centred care in their work and practice, with clients, patients, carers and families.
Tommy’s 'You Can Make a Difference' campaign is based on the key principles of person-centred care, Intelligent Kindness and 'What Matters to You?', and shares learning from Tommy's own experience as a carer. This session promotes learning and reflection on how we can make our workplaces and systems more compassionate, asking ‘what works well?’ but also ‘what can we do differently in the future?
Biography: For five years Tommy Whitelaw was a full-time carer for his late mother Joan who had Vascular Dementia. In 2011 Tommy undertook a walk around Scotland’s towns and cities to collect hundreds of life stories and letters detailing the experiences of individuals who care for a loved one living with dementia. Tommy took this collection of stories to the Scottish Parliament to raise awareness of the value of carers, providing a platform for people to share their experiences and highlight what is needed to better support carers in Scotland.
Since then, he has engaged with thousands of carers through his ‘Tommy on Tour’ blog and as National Lead for Caring and Outreach with the Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland’s Person Centred Voices Project In this role he delivers frequent talks to health and social care professionals and carer organisations across Scotland, raising awareness of the impact of dementia on families and the importance of empowering carers in carrying out their difficult but vital role. This ‘You Can Make a Difference’ campaign has now reached over 270,000 people across 1,800 talks, gathering 30,000 ‘What Matters to You’ pledges, WMTY personalised patient boards and many pledge trees within organisations. Tommy’s work shares the key messages from the ALLIANCE, the ‘What Matters to You?’ approach, the Intelligent Kindness movement, and Civility Saves Lives.
In 2014 ,2019 and again in 2023 Tommy produced Concerts for Caring. Each concert, held at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall saw over 1,800 individuals join together for an evening of music, celebration and respite.
Tommy's passion for his work and the Carer Voices project has not gone unnoticed. He has previously enjoyed partnership working with Professor Fiona McQueen, recently retired Chief Nursing Officer for Scotland, and Professor Jane Cummings, recently retired Chief Nursing Officer for England, and since 2021 has been working closely with CNO for Scotland Directorate
In 2021, Tommy was invited by the Scottish Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Humza Yousef, to sit on the Social Covenant Steering Group.
Helen Martyn, Senior nurse, Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board
Talk: Civility in healthcare
Helen began her career in a small but busy ED in southeast Wales, swiftly recognising an interest in cardiac care, after a short time and some CPD, Helen missed the cut and thrust that ED environments provide. Moving into a senior role within acute and emergency medicine in Cardiff. In 2020 (mid pandemic) Helen was approached to run COTE, whilst feeding into the role some educational elements for Cardiology services, as well as identification of back door challenges, returning her to the southeast valleys.
Helen has continuously taught across the undergraduate nursing programme within Wales, as well as representing academic institutions and the NMC for standard development for nurses. In 2021 Helen began a formal academic post at the University of the West of England, securing the professional lead post within 10 months. Her love for ED nursing persists though and in July 2023 she began her Senior Nurse role within ED, and is widely aware of the persist challenges and increasing expectations on nurses. Helen has been an avid ambassador and speaker for civility saves lives since 2017 and has represented the movement at conferences internationally and across professions.
Helen lives in Wales with her husband, daughter, and Pembrokeshire corgi. She’s a keen, although not accomplished, runner and hiker, loves travelling, baking and is a self-confessed foodie.
Joanne King, Respiratory Consultant Nurse at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust | Chair, ARNS
Breakout session: Respiratory
Joanne qualified in 1991 and has been a senior nurse at Frimley Health (formerly Heatherwood & Wexham Park) NHS Trust since 1996 in a variety of acute roles. She took up the role as respiratory nurse specialist in 2008 before obtaining a Respiratory Consultant Nurse post in 2016.
Joanne has restructured the respiratory services in Berkshire East to form The Adult Integrated Respiratory (AIR) team providing respiratory services across primary and secondary care, integrating community and hospital trusts in providing a seamless journey to the patient. The service offers expertise to patients with COPD, Asthma, ILD, and home oxygen needs, Bronchiectasis, specialist physiotherapy and provides pulmonary rehabilitation including maintenance classes. As the clinical lead for Frimley Adult Integrated Respiratory (FAIR) Services her current role is to provide support, guidance, management, and clinical leadership whilst developing services in respiratory care in both acute and community care sectors including the implementation and development of Acute Respiratory Virtual Ward care. Joanne is also the Frimley Integrated Care System respiratory elective recovery and transformation lead.
Joanne has obtained qualifications in Asthma, COPD and spirometry as well as being a non-medical prescriber. She has also received a BSc (Hons) in Nurse Practitioner Studies from Buckinghamshire University and an MSc in Clinical Health Care from Oxford Brookes University.
Joanne is the ARNS Chair. She is also a member of the National Asthma and COPD Audit programme Board, the COPD / Pulmonary Rehabilitation advisory group and a national member of ACT on COPD working group. She is a committee member of the Service Development Committee, PCRS UK and chairs the respiratory forum and specialist nursing group locally.
Joanne was awarded respiratory Nurse Leader at ARNS in 2018 and Queens Nurse in 2023.

Breakout session: Environmentally sustainable and resilient acute care nursing
Jason Cross, RCN Peri-operative Forum Chair and Advanced Nurse Practitioner
Breakout session: Resuscitation and Frailty
Jason has been a committee member for the RCN Perioperative nursing steering group for a number of years and was elected forum chair in December 2021.
Career and background
Jason joined POPS (Perioperative medicine for the Older Person undergoing Surgery) at Guys and St Thomas NHS foundation Trust in 2008 and until recently was the nurse lead for the service.
Currently Jason is seconded to a neighbouring NHS Trust to lead on the development and integration of POPS into their surgical pathway. In addition to this he continues to have input into medical student, junior doctor and ward nurse education programmes. He has spoken nationally and internationally on the use of comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) in the surgical setting, developing the workforce and on his role as an independent practitioner.
He is currently working with the RCN, HEE and the British Geriatric Society in developing a curricular and competency framework for nurses wishing to direct their career towards perioperative care. He recently was a member of the expert panel for the NICE perioperative care guideline.
Specialist interests include:
- management of the surgical patient with complex medical co-morbidities
- pre-operative comprehensive geriatric assessment of the surgical patient
- staff education focusing on older patients needs in hospital
- workforce development.
Stephen Jones, RCN Professional lead for Mental Health
Breakout session: Mental health
Stephen joined the RCN as professional lead for mental health in January 2021. Prior to this appointment, Stephen worked in the South London NHS Mental Health and Community Partnership (SLP), driving the advancement of senior nursing careers across Oxleas, South West London and St Georges and South London and Maudsley. In his role at the RCN, Stephen’s priorities include: driving the UK-wide parity-of-esteem agenda, supporting the mental wellbeing of the nursing workforce, as well as supporting, developing and promoting the work of the RCN Mental Health Forum.
Stephen is Co-Chair of the One Voice Group, a collective of Royal Colleges, professional bodies and associations from across the UK. The One Voice Group represents over one million health and social care staff working within the NHS and independent sector. We strive to be ‘one voice’, using our strategic strength and influence to collectively help tackle the prevailing issues of emotional and psychological wellbeing, faced by the health and social care workforce.
Suman Shrestha MBE, RCN Professional lead for Critical Care and Flight Nursing
Breakout session: Sepsis - What's new, what's different?
Suman Shrestha is the Professional Lead for Critical Care at the Royal College of Nursing. He also works as a Consultant Nurse in Critical Care at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust. He is a qualified Advanced Critical Care Practitioner and Associate Member of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine.
He has a range of clinical, managerial and academic experiences relating to critical care. He is an immediate past Chair and founding member of the United Kingdom Critical Nursing Alliance which is the alliance of all critical care nursing organisations in the UK.
Before taking up this role, he was a steering committee member of the RCN Critical Care and Flight Nursing Forum.

Right Line, Right Now! Ultrasound in Vascular Access
Each day vascular access is required in a variety of settings. Several factors must be assessed when considering the types of access available, location for device insertion and need for reliable vascular access. On our workshop we will focus on importance of device selection, your current practice and opportunities to increase device insertion success through appropriate selection, training and education. By the end of this session, attendees will be familiar with the evidence base supporting the use of ultrasound within vascular access, will be aware of the importance of vessel and anatomical ultrasound assessments, including the RaPeVA protocols. Will be able to demonstrate safe and effective needling techniques for obtaining vessel puncture.
