Dear Sir Jim,
We are writing again as the Corridor Care Coalition, following our previous letter dated 8 August, to reiterate our collective call in the timely publication of corridor care data and to seek clarity on the expected timetable for its release. We are disappointed not to have received a response to our previous letter, but we wish to re-establish a constructive dialogue on next steps as we remain committed to working with you to end corridor care.
We understand that the data will not be published imminently, and that further delays are expected due to an additional round of data collection under the new definition of corridor care.
We do appreciate NHS England consulting us on the development of the corridor care principles document. It was an opportunity for us to provide expert advice on the practical concerns we had, which was a welcome and constructive step. However, we are concerned about the lack of communication and assurance on when to expect the publication of the data under the new definition. While we understand the need for robust and high quality data based on the updated definition, there is currently no timetable for its publication. It is now over seven months since the commitment was made to publish data, which was originally promised to go live in the Spring.
A public timetable for data publication is vital to maintain trust across the system in the commitment to tackle and ultimately end corridor care, without it the credibility of this commitment is undermined.
As we approach winter, the stakes are higher than ever. We believe the data must be included in NHS England’s Weekly Winter Situation Reports and by the end of this year at the very latest. If NHS England does not view that as possible, it must set out why, and what its revised commitment is.
Your recent press release rightly stated that systems will be held to account where they are not meeting key resilience tests ahead of winter. Corridor care is a clear and urgent indicator of system strain, and must be part of this winter preparation. Without timely and accurate reporting on the prevalence of corridor care, we cannot identify pressure points, track progress, or ensure that reforms
are reaching the areas of greatest need.
We urge NHS England to maintain a dialogue with us on the publication of the data, to publish a timetable for releasing the corridor care data without delay, and to confirm its inclusion in weekly winter reporting by the end of 2025 at the very latest. We also reiterate our request for an implementation plan for the ten-year health plan commitment to eradicate corridor care.
We are at a critical juncture, and further delay puts patients, staff, and public confidence at risk.
Yours sincerely,
The Corridor Care Coalition
