On 1 February 2021, the military seized power in Myanmar, prompting health care workers - alongside teachers, civil servants, and students - to join a nationwide civil disobedience movement. Nursing care continued, but it moved underground.

The Phoenix Bachelor of Nursing Science was created through partnerships between Myanmar universities and the Royal College of Nursing in the UK. Each theory module is jointly taught by Myanmar faculty and international nursing academics, with subject specialists included. Its aim is simple: to deliver high quality nursing education in conflict affected Myanmar.
