For years you have been telling us about the realities of hospital overcrowding and the impact this has on your patients, on you and on your colleagues. It is unsafe, undignified and unacceptable.
Many of you shared your experiences with us, have spoken out publicly and have supported our calls for action. Your testimony has helped shine a light on this significant symptom of the crisis facing our health and social care services and to challenge the normalisation of care in inappropriate areas.
And I want to thank you. Your willingness to speak up for your patients and your profession has brought us to this point. Together, we have ensured that corridor care can no longer go unmeasured, excused and ignored.
What gets measured gets done and for too long there has been no national picture of the scale of the problem.
The Scottish government must move quickly, and we are willing to work with them, to agree a clear definition of corridor care alongside a straight forward reporting system that does not add to the pressures you are already facing.
This commitment to record and report corridor care is an important win, but there is much more to do, particularly as plans for the reform of health and social care develop. We will continue to press Scottish government and employers for action and to make the case for the investment needed to build a sustainable health and care system.
