As we kick off Care Home Open Week, it is a privilege to celebrate the incredible leadership, skill and dedication that defines the adult social care sector. Having managed social care environments myself, and now serving as an RCN Independent Health and Social Care (IHSC) Lead Nurse, I know firsthand just how fulfilling and dynamic this specialty is.
Adult social care nursing is one of the most rewarding career paths a nurse can choose. It grants you the clinical autonomy to act as a visionary leader and the time to build deep, long-term relationships with residents and their families. For student nurses looking ahead, social care isn't just a place to practice, it is a place where your leadership skills will truly thrive.
In fact, I am proud to share that my own journey and passion for this sector are featured in the Greater Manchester Social Care Careers Guide, which explores the immense opportunities available to the next generation of workforce leaders. You can read my feature here.
To support our current care home managers in keeping their focus on what they love most - leading their teams and delivering high-quality care, we have been working hard behind the scenes to create practical, protective resources.
Empowering Managers with Real-World Tools
Clinical managers are the operational anchors of their homes, which means they often oversee complex building and estate responsibilities. To make navigating these duties simple and streamlined, myself, fellow IHSC Lead Nurse Sarah Winfield-Davies, and Louise Church (Head of Health, Safety and Wellbeing) co-developed a brand-new suite of guidance.
This guidance is written by professionals who understand the sector, providing clarity on estate infrastructure so you never have to feel like you are figuring it out alone.
Key Elements of the Guidance:
Access to Competent Advice: Practical steps on how and when to contract specialized advice for areas like fire safety, water hygiene, electrical systems, and asbestos management.
Clarity in Leases: Clear frameworks to define where a landlord's structural liabilities end and an operating provider's responsibilities begin, protecting your team and your registration.
Confidence Through Training: Encouraging proactive health and safety training so managers feel fully empowered to challenge contractors and spot risks early.
By drawing directly on frontline experience, we have built tools that social care leaders can genuinely trust. Let's continue to advocate for safe environments, empowered managers, and exceptional care.
Are you a student nurse thinking about a career in social care, or a manager using our new statutory checklist? I'd love to hear your thoughts! You can email me directly at melissa.stanton@rcn.org.uk to share your experiences.
