The inaugural cohort of Fellows included Barbara Fawkes, Catherine Hall, Winifred Hector, Jean MacFarlane and Doreen Norton. Their influence on practice, education, research and leadership continues to resonate today. The creation of the Fellowship reflected the College’s ambition not only to celebrate exceptional achievement, but also to recognise those whose contributions had earned the respect and admiration of their professional peers. While many Fellows also received national honours, the RCN Fellowship remains unique in recognising those who have advanced nursing science’s distinctive contribution to healthcare. That recognition is as important today as ever, as nursing continues to demonstrate its central role in delivering effective, compassionate and sustainable health systems.
Since 1976, the Roll of Honour has grown to include 262 Fellows and 46 Honorary Fellows. Although many of the earliest recipients are no longer with us, today’s Fellowship community remains active, influential and deeply committed to supporting both the College and the wider profession. Our Honorary Fellows also continue to make significant contributions across healthcare and public life.
It has been my privilege to serve as Convenor of RCN Fellows since 2022. I follow in the footsteps of Convenor colleagues whose leadership has helped shape and strengthen the RCN Fellowship over many years. I am indebted to Gary Jones CBE FRCN, Convenor from 2005 to 2009, who authored a history of the early Fellows to mark the 30th anniversary in 2006.
My time as Convenor has been eventful and immensely rewarding. I have greatly valued the sense of community among Fellows and the generosity with which colleagues have shared their experience, wisdom and support. National groups of Fellows are now established across the United Kingdom, advancing important professional agendas and contributing to activities throughout the College. The Fellowship has also become more diverse, representing nurses from a broad range of specialisms and career pathways. Fellows contribute regularly through monthly blogs, whilst the In Conversation with Nursing Pioneers series has become a well-established and popular platform, with recordings available through the RCN Fellows webpage.
Fifty years on, the RCN Fellowship remains the highest honour the College can bestow on its members. It has been a privilege to represent such an accomplished and inspiring group of colleagues. Their achievements continue to shape our profession, strengthen our influence and improve the lives of those we serve.
As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we honour the legacy of those who have gone before, recognise the contributions of today’s Fellows, and look forward with confidence to the achievements of future generations who will earn this unique distinction.
