My experience at the RCN Congress in Liverpool

Tolulope Adodo 2 Sep 2025

This blog represents my reflections on attending RCN Congress 2025 as a voting member for the Perioperative Forum.

Representing the Perioperative Forum at the recent RCN Congress in Liverpool was a truly rewarding opportunity that I thoroughly enjoyed and will not forget.

I arrived in Liverpool on a sunny Sunday afternoon. After checking into the hotel and taking some time to rest, I attended the branch meeting later that evening, which set a positive tone for the days ahead.

On Monday morning, RCN Congress officially commenced with a warm welcome address from RCN President Bejoy Sebastian. This was followed by the Awards and Recognition Ceremony, where outstanding nurses and nursing students were honoured for their significant contributions to the profession which was an inspiring start to the event.

The first keynote address was delivered by RCN General Secretary, Professor Nicola Ranger. In her powerful speech, she highlighted the urgent need for the government to address critical issues such as staffing shortages, corridor care, and fair pay for nurses. She made it clear that if the government continues to ignore nurses’ concerns, industrial action, including strike action, could once again be on the horizon.

The second keynote session was both emotional and inspiring. We were joined virtually by our courageous nursing colleagues from conflict zones in Gaza and Myanmar. They shared the harrowing challenges they face daily and called on us for continued support and solidarity during these extremely difficult times.

Throughout RCN Congress, twenty-three debates were presented by members—some for discussion and others for resolution. I had the privilege of listening to passionate and articulate colleagues speak on a wide range of important topics. I was also honoured to contribute by speaking during one of the emergency debates.

During the Forum meeting, I had the opportunity to engage in a meaningful discussion with our Forum Chair, Angeline. We reflected on the challenges currently facing the forum and shared constructive ideas on how to improve and move forward.

As a delightful addition to the week, we had the opportunity to enjoy guided city tours of Liverpool on Tuesday and Wednesday. It was a fantastic way to unwind, connect with fellow members, and appreciate the city’s rich culture, history, and spirit.

RCN Congress concluded on Thursday, wrapping up what was a truly enriching experience. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect, network, and share perspectives with colleagues from across the UK. I left feeling inspired, empowered, and proud to be part of such a vibrant, passionate, and resilient profession.
