New Name, Bigger Purpose: The Early Career Nurses Network

We’re excited to announce that the Newly Registered Nurses (NRN) Network is evolving—and from now on will be known as the Early Career Nurse (ECN) Network.

We’re excited to announce that the Newly Registered Nurses (NRN) Network is evolving—and from now on will be known as the Early Career Nurse (ECN) Network.

This name change marks more than just a new title. It reflects a renewed commitment to supporting and empowering nurses across the first five years of their careers—a period that is critical for professional development, confidence building, and long-term retention in the profession.

Why the Change?
Previously, the NRN Network focused on the first 18 months post-registration. While this early support remains essential, we know that many challenges continue well beyond that initial phase. The transition into full professional practice is not a single moment—it’s a journey.

By expanding our scope to include nurses up to five years post-registration, the new ECN Network will better reflect the real experiences of early career nurses and provide continuity through what we know can be a challenging period.

Retaining Talent, Supporting Growth
Many nurses leave the workforce or disengage from professional bodies during these crucial early years. The ECN Network will offer sustained peer support, tailored resources, and leadership opportunities to help nurses stay connected, feel valued, and go forward with confidence. All of this will help grow the future of nursing.

Member Leadership at the Heart
Continuity is key—not just for early career nurse members, but for the network’s leadership too. Expanding the ECN’s scope allows future leaders to grow and flourish within the network itself and give members more time and opportunity to shape its direction and influence the RCN’s work for early career nurses.

A Stronger Future
The Early Career Nurses Network will be a vital platform to nurture the future of the profession, advocate for better working conditions, and create a sense of belonging and pride among the next generation of nursing professionals.

We’re proud to make this change and look forward to continuing this journey with all of you—every step of the way.

If you are in your early career and not already part of the network, we would love you to sign up to the network to connect with us and benefit from our activity: Early career nurses network.
