Northern Pride: a powerful mix of joy, connection and purpose

Attending Northern Pride in Newcastle this year was a truly special experience, made even more meaningful by being part of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) delegation.

Marching alongside fellow members was a powerful reminder of how important it is for health care professionals to stand visibly in support of LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion.

Our presence highlighted the ongoing commitment within nursing to champion equality, both in the workplace and across the communities we serve.

The day on 19 July began with the emergency services breakfast, which was a brilliant opportunity to connect with colleagues from across different sectors. Sharing food and conversation in such a welcoming environment set the tone for the day — one of collaboration, solidarity, and pride.

It was inspiring to see the emergency services and health professions represented so proudly, showing that care and compassion extend beyond our roles and into our values as people.

The festival itself was vibrant and full of life. Marching through Newcastle with RCN friends and colleagues, surrounded by colour, music, and cheers from the crowds, created a real sense of unity.

Later, the stalls, performances, and activities captured both the celebratory spirit of Pride and the ongoing need to push for equality. Being part of the RCN group gave me a deep sense of pride in my profession and in the role we play in advocating for inclusivity.

Northern Pride was not only a celebration but also a reminder of the progress achieved and the work still ahead. Seeing families, allies, and colleagues marching together reinforced the belief that we are stronger when we stand together.

For me, the day was a powerful mix of joy, connection, and purpose, and I felt honoured to represent nursing within such an important movement.
