A First for Northern Ireland: A Career Pathway Mapping the Valuable Professional Careers of Nursing Home Nurses, By Gary Cousins, NIPEC Senior Professional Officer.

Why is it important to recognise the Complexity of Nursing Home Care?

Nursing homes are complex care environments where nurses demonstrate advanced clinical judgement, autonomy and leadership every day. Yet the contribution and career potential of nursing home nursing has not always been fully recognised.

To address this, NIPEC, in partnership with a wide range of stakeholders, has developed A Career Pathway for Nurses in Nursing Homes, a practical framework that recognises the expertise of nurses in this setting and supports professional development from early career through to senior leadership.

This collaborative work is also reflected in the RCN podcast Your career pathway in nursing homes with NIPEC and RCN, which highlights the importance of visibility, confidence and structured progression for nurses working in nursing homes across Northern Ireland.

How Does the Pathway Recognise Nursing Home Nursing?

Nursing home nurses care for people with complex, long term and often multiple needs, across specialities such as dementia care, mental health, learning disability and end of life care. The new pathway acknowledges this complexity and places nursing home nursing firmly within a professional, person centred framework aligned to national standards.

The pathway applies to all registered nurses working in nursing homes, including newly qualified nurses, internationally educated nurses, experienced nurses and senior leaders. It also supports managers, educators, students and regulators by providing a shared understanding of nursing roles and career progression in this sector.

How does the Career Pathway Support Progression and Development for Nurses in Nursing Homes?

The pathway sets out clear routes for progression from Staff Nurse to senior clinical and leadership roles. These routes are mapped to the Levels of Practice and underpinned by the four pillars of nursing practice:

• Clinical practice - the foundation of safe, effective and person centred care
• Education and learning - supporting continuous development
• Leadership - shaping teams and influencing culture
• Research and development - driving improvement and innovation

Rather than focusing solely on job titles, the pathway emphasises the knowledge, skills and behaviours required at each stage of practice. It supports structured induction, preceptorship and reflective supervision for early-career nurses, while highlighting leadership, quality improvement and workforce development opportunities for more experienced nurses.

How does Investing in Nurses Career Pathway Improve Care?

A key message from both the pathway and the wider sector is that investing in nurses strengthens the quality of care, safety, and person centred outcomes for residents. As nurses progress, they are supported to:

• Shape positive workplace cultures
• Lead teams effectively
• Drive continuous improvement

Developed with the sector, for the sector, A Career Pathway for Nurses in Nursing Homes demonstrates that nursing homes offer skilled, rewarding and sustainable careers and reinforces that nursing home nurses are central to delivering high quality, compassionate care across Northern Ireland.

The pathway was formally launched on 5 May and is available to download via the NIPEC website.
