RCN Wales publishes new priorities and recommendations for the future of nursing education and lifelong learning

Press Release 25/03/2026

RCN Wales has today unveiled its updated Priorities and Recommendations for Nursing Education and Lifelong Learning in Wales. The publication was launched at the RCN Institute of Nursing Excellence in Wales: Leadership Summit today in Cardiff and succeeds the 2016 RCN Wales Education Strategy.

It reflects the political, economic, digital, and workforce changes shaping nursing in Wales and outlines three strategic priorities to strengthen professional learning, embed research informed practice, and build a flexible and sustainable workforce to meet the growing complexity of population needs.

RCN Wales is urging Welsh Government, Health Education and Improvement Wales, higher education institutions, health boards, and social care partners to work together to implement these recommendations and strengthen the educational foundations of the nursing workforce.

Chair of the RCN Wales Board, Jackie Davies, said:

“Education is the backbone of professional nursing. This new document makes clear that lifelong learning is not optional but essential. Nurses and nursing support workers across Wales deserve access to high quality, equitable, and inspiring education throughout their careers.

These recommendations are grounded in the real challenges our members face every day. They also reflect the immense potential within our profession. With the right support, nurses will continue to lead change, innovate, and deliver the very best care for the people of Wales.”

Executive Director of RCN Wales Helen Whyley, said:

“We are proud to publish a renewed and ambitious vision for nursing education in Wales. The workforce is under unprecedented pressure, and yet nurses continue to demonstrate professionalism, compassion, and resilience.

“For Wales to have a strong and sustainable health and care system, investment in nursing education must be prioritised. This includes protected time for learning, digital capabilities, and clear pathways into advanced and consultant practice.”

The recommendations in this document provide a roadmap for government, employers, and education partners to work together and deliver the system wide change that nurses urgently need and deserve.”
