Nursing is a highly skilled, safety-critical profession and it is essential to patient safety that our title is protected, says Royal College of Nursing

Press Release 30/07/2026

Responding to the Department of Health and Social Care consultation on protecting the title of nurse RCN Chief Nursing Officer Professor Lynn Woolsey, said:

“This is a significant win and step towards protecting the title of nurse. It is right that the government has committed to this after our members campaigned tirelessly to secure this for nursing. Nursing is a highly skilled, safety-critical profession and it is essential to patient safety that our title is protected.

“Patients and their families deserve to trust that when they are told they are being treated by a nurse, it is a registered nurse providing their care. They need to be able to trust that knowledge, professionalism and clinical expertise that comes with our profession."
