Managing Long-Term Conditions in the Prison Setting
01 May 2026 - 31 Dec (TBC)
Choose event information:
A 2 day face-to-face workshop for newly qualified nurses, those new to prison nursing and those working in long-term conditions roles.

Managing long term conditions in a prison environment requires a blend of clinical skills, professional judgement, and an understanding of the unique challenges faced by people in custody. This two day, in person workshop equips nurses with the confidence, knowledge, and practical skills needed to deliver safe, evidence based care within prison settings.
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Apply national long term condition guidance within the context of prison healthcare, recognising the complexities and constraints of the environment.
- Promote self care and patient empowerment, adapting approaches to meet the needs of people living in custody.
- Enhance accountability and clinical decision making, ensuring practice aligns with professional standards and custodial requirements.
- Deliver safe and coordinated care, including medicines management, release and discharge planning, and effective inter agency communication.
Conditions covered
The workshop provides focused, practical learning on the long term conditions most encountered in prison settings:
- Asthma
- COPD
- Diabetes
- Epilepsy
- Hypertension.
These clinical topics are explored alongside wider professional and ethical considerations relevant to nursing practice in prison.
This workshop can be offered at RCN HQ or within your own prisons’ services (depending on availability and timings).
