Join us for an insightful webinar exploring the key issues shaping men’s health today. We’ll delve into the physical and mental health challenges that disproportionately affect men and discuss how we, as healthcare professionals, can work together to reduce inequalities in this vital area of nursing.
This session will cover:
- Long-term conditions in men’s health – understanding patterns, risks, and opportunities for early intervention.
- Cancer screening and prevention – promoting awareness and improving access to life-saving screening programmes.
- Mental health and suicide prevention – addressing stigma, supporting men’s wellbeing, and strengthening preventative strategies.
Whether you work directly in clinical practice or support wider services, this webinar offers practical insights and collaborative approaches to improve outcomes for men across all settings.
Speaker 1: Callum Metcalfe-O'Shea
Callum is an award winning Advanced Nurse Practitioner who has spent the past eight years working in primary care specialising in diabetes. During this time, he supported the creation of a local health professionals forum to strengthen diabetes education and training for nurses and wider multidisciplinary teams. He has held a range of clinical and leadership roles, including Clinical Lead for Diabetes within his local ICB, and continues to work clinically in general practice. Callum also serves as a clinical leadership advisor for the NHS Clinical Leaders Network and sits on several editorial boards, including the Journal of General Practice Nursing.
Alongside his broader work in long term condition management, Callum has a particular interest in men’s health and has published on this topic in the Journal of General Practice Nursing, highlighting the need for improved engagement and tailored approaches for men living with long term conditions.
He is a strong advocate for advanced practice and now works at the Royal College of Nursing as the UK Professional Lead for Long Term Conditions, shaping national nursing practice and policy across the UK.
Speaker 2: Allan Harper-Reid
Allan has worked in cancer care throughout his nursing career. Currently working as a Cancer Nurse Specialist in a digital healthcare setting providing and coordinating personalised care remotely via online consultations.
He holds experience working in the NHS, the third sector and the private sector. Working in these settings has meant working across all areas of the UK and adapting care and clinical information to reflect where people live.
Allan has previously worked for a large national cancer charity holding leadership posts and helping shape the services provided by telephone, online and written across the four nations of the UK. Working in the charity sector allowed him to be part of and to lead on development projects including production of clinical standards for a national helpline.
He has a keen interest in providing equitable, personalised care to cancer patients and the people who support them, regardless of location, gender, ethnicity, neurodivergence or sexuality. He is also keen that non-traditional nursing settings are reflected in guidelines and materials produced for nurses.
Speaker 3: Dr Dan Warrender
Dr Dan Warrender is a Registered Mental Health Nurse, Mentalization-Based Treatment Practitioner and Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing, with experience in acute mental health and psychotherapy settings. Areas of interest are broad across mental health, but research, writing and public speaking has often covered ‘personality disorder’, mentalization, crisis intervention, the ethics of risk management, therapeutic practice, and mental health nurse education. A vocal critic of the UK’s Nursing and Midwifery Council and their approach to mental health nurse curricula, Dan also started the campaign group 'Mental Health Deserves Better', which actively resists generic nursing education and argues for the complexity of the mental health nursing role to be recognised. Dan also works privately offering therapy, training and consultancy. Dan is on the steering committee for the Royal College of Nursing Mental Health Forum.
This brief presentation will explore men's mental health in contemporary society, outlining risk factors and some key areas of concern, and offering some suggestions for supporting colleagues and patients.
