This collaborative online learning event delivered by the RCN Diabetes Forum and the Independent Health and Social Care Team is designed for all care home staff involved in supporting residents living with diabetes, including registered nurses, nursing associates, healthcare assistants, care assistants, managers, and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
As the use of Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) becomes increasingly common across health and social care settings, it is important that care home staff feel confident in understanding CGM technology, recognising what glucose trends may indicate, and responding appropriately within their scope of practice.
Through presentations, practical discussion, and a real-life case scenario, attendees will explore the fundamentals of CGM, considerations for supporting older people living with frailty and dementia, and the role of effective communication, documentation, and escalation in maintaining resident safety.
This event will be delivered virtually and provides an opportunity to learn alongside colleagues from across the care home sector.
By the end of this session, participants should be able to:
- Describe the basic principles of Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) and how CGM differs from traditional finger-prick blood glucose monitoring.
- Recognise common CGM devices and understand key terminology used in diabetes technology.
- Understand the importance of documentation, communication, and multidisciplinary working when monitoring glucose trends.
- Apply learning through practical case studies
- Reflect on how CGM can support safer, more personalised diabetes care within care home settings.
This is open to members and non-members.

- Revalidation: Participants may wish to record their attendance and reflective learning hours as part of their professional development portfolio or NMC revalidation requirements, in line with local and professional requirements.
