RCN Eastern: What is job evaluation? An introduction for managers
12 Aug 2026, 16:00 - 17:00
Choose event information:
Join us between 4pm - 5pm to explore the job evaluation process and learn how to support an effective review.
RCN members working in management and leadership roles are invited to join this online briefing on job evaluation and the review of Band 5 nursing roles in England.
Managers will play an important role in ensuring the review is carried out constructively and that job descriptions accurately reflect the work nursing staff are currently required to undertake. Although Band 5 roles are being prioritised, the principles covered in this session apply to roles at every Agenda for Change pay band.
Led by RCN Eastern Pay Delivery Officer Steve Haynes, the session will explain:
- the purpose of the Band 5 nursing review and the wider NHS Job Evaluation Scheme
- the role of managers in reviewing job descriptions and person specifications
- how to engage postholders meaningfully and consider the evidence they provide
- the importance of reflecting the full role undertaken by a competent postholder
- how job matching and evaluation panels determine banding outcomes
- how to manage differences of opinion about job content
- the support, guidance and information available from the RCN
This session is not about asking managers to determine the appropriate pay band. Instead, it will help managers support an accurate, fair and evidence-based process before job documentation is submitted for matching or evaluation.
A well-managed review can improve staff confidence, role clarity, workforce planning, recruitment and retention, while reducing the risk of future disputes about job content or banding.

Meet your Pay Delivery Officer - Steve Haynes

Steve is the Pay Delivery Officer for the Eastern region, supporting the RCN's Know Your Worth campaign. He has worked at the RCN for five years and brings extensive experience in employment relations, negotiation and workplace representation. He holds the TUC Diploma in Employment Law and the ACAS Certificate in Workplace Mediation.
Steve has specialist knowledge of the NHS Job Evaluation Scheme and has supported members to secure accurate job descriptions and fair evaluation of their roles, delivered training, and worked with NHS employers to improve local policies and processes. His successful outcomes include a group of members receiving an increased pay band and over two years' back pay.
Before joining the RCN, Steve worked at the British Medical Association during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Steve said: "It doesn't matter at what level of nursing you work; fundamentally, you're selling your labour. The price you're paid for the level of work you deliver is determined by a contractual job evaluation process. If you think you're working above what you're being paid for, check your job description, get your matched job report, and read the RCN's Know Your Worth guidance. I'd encourage every member to think about what the quality of patient care will be like in 10 years if we don't act now."
This webinar is aimed at all of those in NHS management or leadership roles in the Eastern region of England.
Whether you're wanting to learn more about the band 5 review, or job evaluation more widely, or a manager wanting to understand the process of job evaluation, this webinar is for you.
