A display for Refugee Week (15-21 June), created by refugees and asylum seekers through the Fences & Frontiers culture programme.
As part of our ‘Moved to Care’ exhibition, author and nurse Romalyn Ante and artist Marcus Orlandi led workshops for refugees to explore new ways to express their journeys and think about the people and places left behind, and the tastes, smells and sights that stay with them.
Some of the poetry and flags created in these workshops will be on display during Refugee Week in the Trampoline Café, which provides training and employment for refugees to help shape their future. There is no need to book to visit, just drop in during our opening hours.
Romalyn Ante FRSL is an award-winning Filipino-born British nurse, poet, novelist, and editor, based in the Midlands. In 2012, she began writing poetry after completing her nursing studies and becoming a registered nurse. Her debut novel, The Left-Behind Child, is published by Chatto in August 2026. The poetry in this display was written by refugees and asylum seekers in a workshop led by Romalyn.
Marcus Orlandi is an artist and writer based in Thamesmead, Southeast London. He has worked with arts organisations throughout the UK and had banner and text-based installations commissioned by artsdepot, Bow Arts, Ty Pawb and Barking and Dagenham Council. Marcus led a workshop at the RCN for refugees and asylum seekers to explore their experiences through the colourful fabric banners.
Fences & Frontiers exists to make London a more welcoming and inspiring place for refugees and asylum seekers as they rebuild their lives. Through cultural, creative, and nature-based activities, the organisation creates opportunities to build community, gain practical skills and knowledge for life in the UK, and find hope for the future. Check out their website to learn more and support their work.
Trampoline Café, founded by the team behind NEMI Teas, acts as a platform to offer hospitality training and employment to the UK Refugee Community. These cafes offer a comfortable and caring environment where refugees can receive front line hospitality training, develop their language skills and build valuable relationships; ultimately helping to them to become independent citizens.
