RCN South: What is job evaluation? An introduction
08 Sep 2026, 10:30 - 12:00
Choose event information:
Join us between 10.30am – 12pm to hear about the job evaluation process. Ask questions and be inspired to make changes to have your worth recognised.
Nursing staff are essential, but your skills, knowledge and responsibilities are often taken for granted.
This session will help you understand more about how to have your role valued fairly. Job descriptions for nursing staff are often out of date or haven’t kept up with the changes in the nursing profession.
The Westminster government has committed to review every band 5 NHS nursing role in England using the job evaluation scheme – but this is just the start.
Job evaluation is the process of evaluating the level of skill, knowledge and responsibility your role requires. It is open to all staff employed directly by the NHS and is an intrinsic part of your Agenda for Change conditions and a contractual right.
What to expect
In this webinar you’ll hear about how to see your own value, gain understanding around job evaluation processes, and be given the opportunity to put your questions to our pay delivery officers.
You’ll leave with a better understanding of what to expect around everything related to job evaluation.
If you have any queries please contact our South West Pay Delivery Officer Shani Woodbridge at: shani.woodbridge@rcn.org.uk

This webinar is aimed at all NHS staff on Agenda for Change contracts located in London and the South West and South East regions of England.

This webinar will be hosted by the pay delivery officers from your region:
South East Pay Delivery Officer Clare Harrison

Prior to joining the RCN in 2011 Clare worked in a business environment, representing small companies.
Since then, she has been a full-time RCN Regional Officer for 13 years, based in the Croydon office and supporting, representing and advising RCN members living in the Kent area.
Clare is currently working as one of two pay delivery officers covering the South East region.
South East Pay Delivery Officer Dan Marsh

Dan Marsh is one of two pay delivery officers for the South East region. In his role he supports members on pay, job evaluation, and workplace issues.
From an early age, Dan developed a strong commitment to fairness, inclusion and ensuring that people have a voice.
Throughout his career, he has worked alongside individuals and communities, helping them build the confidence, skills and collective strength needed to create lasting positive change.
Dan's passion for empowering others began at the age of 12 through his work raising awareness of neurodiversity. By delivering talks and presentations across the UK, including on behalf of the Dyspraxia Foundation, he sought to challenge perceptions, promote inclusion and create opportunities for people whose voices were too often overlooked.
Building on his experience in youth and community work, Dan became increasingly involved in organising, campaigning and community leadership. Guided by a belief that people are strongest when they work together, he worked with local communities to influence change, including serving as a district councillor and co-founding a local Pride organisation. He later brought this experience into trade union organising, supporting healthcare workers to organise collectively around pay, progression and workplace issues, including campaigns to secure back pay and improved workplace outcomes.
London Pay Delivery Officer Cristina Tistu

Cristina Tistu is a Pay Delivery Officer for the London Region, supporting the organisation's Know Your Worth campaign. In this role, she works closely with members, employers and local representatives to promote understanding of the NHS job evaluation process and support nursing staff seeking fair recognition and reward for the work they do. A key focus of her work is supporting members through the Band 5 re-evaluation programme, helping them navigate the process with confidence and access the information and guidance they need.
Cristina has an academic background in law, holding an LLB degree and a Master's degree in employment law, with a particular focus on trade union rights and workplace relations. Her interest in employment rights and workplace fairness led her to a career supporting workers and advocating for equitable treatment in the workplace.
Through her current role, Cristina delivers engagement events, presentations and roadshows across NHS trusts in London, raising awareness of job evaluation and empowering members to understand and articulate the value of their roles within the profession.
London Pay Delivery Officer Julie Thornton
Julie Thornton is a Pay Delivery Officer at the Royal College of Nursing with more than 25 years' NHS experience including in senior clinical leadership, patient safety and service improvement.
Julie is committed to ensuring nursing staff receive fair recognition and reward for the work they do.
South West Pay Delivery Officer Shani Woodbridge

Shani Woodbridge is a registered midwife and the Pay Delivery Officer for the South West region. With more than a decade of experience in the trade union movement, she has served as a workplace representative, staff side secretary, and led a major job evaluation programme, developing extensive expertise in NHS pay, workforce policy, and job evaluation.
Having experienced progression from band 5 to band 6 early in her clinical career, Shani has long been passionate about ensuring that nursing staff are fairly recognised and rewarded for the complexity, responsibility, and expertise they bring to patient care. She has a particular interest in the national developments surrounding Annex 20, the band 5 nursing review, and the updated nursing and midwifery profiles, which together provide an important opportunity to ensure nursing roles are appropriately evaluated and rewarded.
In her current role, Shani works with NHS organisations across the South West to support the delivery of the national nursing job evaluation review, helping to ensure that the process is undertaken consistently, fairly, and in line with national guidance and agreed time frames. She is committed to supporting employers, staff representatives, and nursing professionals throughout this significant programme of work.
