This session will bring together research and policy perspectives to explore the current evidence base, the practical realities faced by healthcare professionals, and the policy considerations shaping future improvements in HMP safety.
The webinar will feature presentations from:
- Dr Karen Campbell, Immediate Past President, UK Oncology Nursing Society (UKONS)
- Louise Church, Head of Health, Safety and Wellbeing in Employment Relations, Royal College of Nursing (RCN)
Dr Campbell will present findings from her latest research, offering insight into how occupational exposure to HMPs occurs in practice and the symptoms reported by healthcare workers. Louise Church will outline the RCN's recent position paper, highlighting key risks, gaps in the current regulatory framework, and recommendations to strengthen protections for staff.
Drawing on both research and frontline experience, the session will examine patterns of exposure, associated health risks, and the challenges of managing these risks within existing frameworks such as COSHH. It will also explore practical approaches to risk reduction, including engineering controls, environmental monitoring, training, and governance, alongside the need for clearer definitions and more consistent implementation.
