Join us for an informative webinar exploring the important role of vaccination in protecting children, young people, and adults living with rheumatic diseases who are receiving immunosuppressive therapies.
Adult rheumatology perspective
Professor Abhishek - Professor of Rheumatology, University of Nottingham and Honorary Consultant Rheumatologist, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust
Professor Abhishek is an internationally recognised researcher who has secured approximately £10 million in research funding as Chief Investigator. His research interests include blood monitoring of DMARDs, vaccination in rheumatology patients, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. He currently leads two NIHR-funded national studies: The MOOSE Study (Methotrexate Oral or Subcutaneous for Rheumatoid Arthritis) and the T2T Study (Treat-to-Target versus Usual Care in Gout).
During this session, Professor Abhishek will discuss:
- The evidence supporting the safety and effectiveness of vaccinations in rheumatology patients
- Barriers to vaccine uptake and common reasons patients remain unvaccinated
- Potential strategies to address vaccine hesitancy.
Paediatric perspective
Dr Marcus Sim - Paediatric Rheumatology Registrar, Sheffield Children's Hospital
Marcus will provide an overview of vaccination considerations for children and young people (CYP) on immunosuppression. Topics will include:
- The routine childhood immunisation schedule
- Catch-up immunisation strategies
- Additional vaccines recommended for CYP on immunosuppression
- Other approaches to reducing infection risk
- Treatment of specific infections whilst immunocompromised.
