The Advanced Leadership in Nursing Practice programme is designed to support registered nurses develop skills in leading and managing themselves and their teams to deliver excellent patient centred care.
Suitable for registered nurses working in any sector, including NHS or independent health and social care.About this programme
This unit aims to develop registered nurses’ leadership skills, equipping them with the knowledge, confidence and competencies required to lead teams, drive change, and enhance patient care in complex healthcare settings. It explores leadership theories, strategic decision-making, healthcare policy, and the impact of leadership on organisational culture and patient outcomes.
This unit will be delivered online over several months with 10 taught days. In addition to the taught sessions, there will be self-directed learning, and
assessments which must be completed and passed, to receive a certificate of completion. This equates to 200 hours learning time for this unit in total. Successful completion of the unit will gain you 20 credits at Level 7, accredited by Agored Cymru.
Learning Outcomes:
- Be able to apply leadership theories and models in the context of nursing and healthcare.
- Understand how strategic decision-making and problem-solving skills can be applied to complex healthcare challenges.
- Be able to employ leadership knowledge and skills to influence organisational culture, team dynamics, and patient safety.
- Be able to lead and manage change effectively within healthcare settings.
- Be able to critically reflect on own leadership style and develop a personal leadership action plan.
- Be able to apply the ethical, legal, and professional responsibilities of nurse leaders.

Who is this programme suitable for?
Ideally participants will either need to be based in Wales or working in Wales - if you are based outside of Wales, please contact us via CPDWales@rcn.org.uk for a discussion about the suitability of this programme for you.
This unit is open to Registered Nurses, who hold current registration with the NMC. Suitable for registered nurses working in any sector, including NHS or independent health and social care. This programme is open to both RCN members and non-members.
Technology access: All applicants will need access to a laptop or tablet with camera and microphone capability. A mobile phone only will not be suitable.
Programme dates
This unit will be delivered online, over 10 days, on the following dates:
- Day 1 – Thursday 8 October 2026
- Day 2 – Wednesday 21 October 2026
- Day 3 – Thursday 5 November 2026
- Day 4 – Wednesday 18 November 2026
- Day 5 – Wednesday 2 December 2026
- Day 6 – Thursday 17 December 2026
- Day 7 – Wednesday 13 January 2027
- Day 8 – Thursday 28 January 2027
- Day 9 – Wednesday 10 February 2027
- Day 10 – Thursday 25 February 2027
In addition to the taught sessions, there will be self-directed learning, and assessments which must be completed and passed, to receive a certificate of completion. There is 200 hours learning time for this unit in total.
Assessment
The assessment will include a development of professional portfolio, to include an academic poster and written assignment.
Assignments will be due in February 2027 and April 2027.

To pay by invoice you must send all of the below to eventsreg@rcn.org.uk
1. A copy of the Purchase Order document from your organisation or company (we cannot process your order without it)
2. Your Finance department/accounts payable contact email address to receive an electronic copy of the invoice from us
3. A completed RCN Events Booking Form for each delegate in the booking.
Once the invoice has been raised, you will then receive confirmation of your delegate booking on the event requested. Invoices are to be paid within 30 days of the invoice being issued.
Cancellation policy:
Cancellations received up to one week before the start of the event (Thursday 1 October 2026) will be refunded, minus a £25 administration fee. No refunds can be processed after this date.
Places can be substituted with the prior knowledge and agreement of RCN Events.
