The Compassionate Conversations programme is designed to support you to hold compassionate conversations in your practice, with the goal of creating a sense of trust and emotional connection, ensuring patients feel valued and understood, especially during challenging times.
What are compassionate conversations?
Compassionate Conversations are interactions between healthcare providers and patients that are empathetic, understanding and supportive. These conversations go beyond just delivering medical information; they involve actively listening to the patient, acknowledging their emotions, concerns and fears, and responding with care and respect. The goal is to create a sense of trust and emotional connection, ensuring patients feel valued and understood, especially during challenging times. Compassionate communication can improve the patient's overall experience, promote better outcomes, and strengthen the therapeutic relationship.
About this programme
Study this online programme to understand the guiding principles of holding compassionate conversations, to evaluate own practice and support others to hold compassionate conversations.
The programme consists of 3 days of taught online sessions plus additional self-directed learning and an assessment. Successful completion of the unit will gain you 4 credits at Level 3, accredited by Agored Cymru.

Who is this programme suitable for?
This programme is open to staff across health and social care. RCN membership is not essential. NMC registration is not a requirement of enrolment on this programme.
Participants will either need to be based in Wales or work in Wales.
On successful completion of the programme you will gain 4 credits at Level 3.
Technology access: All applicants will need access to a laptop or tablet with camera and microphone capability. A mobile phone only will unfortunately not be suitable.
Programme dates
This unit will be delivered online, over three days, one day per week for three weeks, on the following dates:
- Day 1 - Thursday 17 September, 9.30am - 4.30pm
- Day 2 - Thursday 24 September, 9.30am - 4.30pm
- Day 3 - Wednesday 30 September, 9.30am - 4.30pm
There will also be additional self-directed learning and an assessment. There is 40 hours learning time for this unit in total.

How to enrol
Booking closing date for all applications and payments is Friday 4 September 2026.
Bookings can be made online via the 'Book Online' button above.
Phone bookings can be made by telephoning our RCN Events Registration team on 02920 546460 (Mon - Fri, 9.30am - 4.30pm), quoting event 5926.
You can also download and complete a booking form via the 'Download booking form' button above. Payments can be made via credit card/Maestro, invoice (purchase order required), or BACS.
To pay by invoice you must send all of the below to eventsreg@rcn.org.uk
- A copy of the Purchase Order document from your organisation or company (we cannot process your order without it)
- Your Finance department/accounts payable contact email address to receive an electronic copy of the invoice from us
- A completed RCN Events Booking Form for each delegate in the booking.
Once the invoice has been raised, you will then receive confirmation of your delegate booking on the event requested. Invoices are to be paid within 30 days of the invoice being issued.
Cancellation policy:
Cancellations received up to one week before the start of the event (Thursday 10 September 2026) will be refunded, minus a £25 administration fee. No refunds can be processed after this date.
Places can be substituted with the prior knowledge and agreement of RCN Events.

Bookings can also be made via email with a downloaded booking form with credit card details emailed to eventsreg@rcn.org.uk
All bookings will be confirmed in writing.
You will not be registered for this event unless payment accompanies your application. Places cannot be held provisionally.
The RCN reserves the right to refuse any booking at any time.
