AI has great potential and must enhance personal nursing care but not replace it, says Royal College of Nursing

Press Release 21/10/2025

Responding to the results of a trial using artificial intelligence to support NHS administrative work, RCN UK Head of Nursing Practice Stephen Jones said:

“The goal of AI must be freeing up nursing time, allowing staff to deliver more care where it's needed, rather than spending time on outdated administrative tasks. For that to be a reality, nursing professionals must be involved in development and implementation, with adequate time provided to train staff up on new systems and clear lines of accountability and safety measures in place to protect patients.

“AI has great potential to modernise services, but ministers shouldn’t be completely seduced by it alone. It must enhance personal nursing care, not replace it, and be delivered alongside new investment in growing the nursing workforce.”
