ENT Emergency Nurse Practitioner recognised in RCN Scotland Awards

Kirstie Law, an Emergency Nurse Practitioner on an ear, nose, and throat ward at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, was announced as the winner of the RCN Scotland Adult Nursing Award at the dazzling RCN Scotland Nurse of the Year Awards ceremony tonight (12 June 2025).

This award recognises those who have succeeded in raising standards of care for their patients and service users and have made an outstanding contribution to the care of adults.

Described as exceptional by her nominator, Kirstie provides high-quality, patient-centered emergency care, treating around 4,500 patients a year. Her approach enables many patients to be treated and discharged without hospital admission, improving patient flow and resource efficiency. A key figure in training and supporting junior doctors and nurses, Kirstie also contributes to the development of ENT nurse practitioner roles, working with Glasgow Caledonian University to enhance training modules.

The judges were impressed with Kirstie’s role in leading on the development of an alert system in the hospital to ensure patients with a tracheostomy are automatically flagged to her to ensure appropriate care is delivered from the outset. Head Judge, Jacqui Neil, said: “Kirstie is a highly passionate advanced nurse practitioner, and this shone through in her interview. It is clear that  her work over the past 18 years will leave a positive legacy across Glasgow.”

Commenting on Kirstie’s win, Colin Poolman, RCN Scotland Executive Director, said: “I’m pleased to congratulate Kirstie on her award. Kirstie’s work in reducing hospital admission is vital and her commitment to using her knowledge and skill to support and train other health professionals is commendable. A truly deserving winner.”

Congratulations also go to runner up Morna Miller, Delirium Nurse from NHS Ayrshire and Arran, and our highly commended finalist Amanda Manson, Cardiac Nurse Specialist from NHS Orkney.
