The band 5 nursing roles review is underway, and we spoke to Diane Steele, an RCN member in NHS Lanarkshire, about the process she went through to get a successful outcome.

Diane worked as a staff nurse in various settings for 24 years before the opportunity to apply for the band 5 nursing roles review arose.

She said: “For many years, I felt I hadn’t reached my full potential remaining at Band 5; I never saw this banding as a true reflection of my abilities, skills, or knowledge. When the opportunity for re-banding became available, I felt it was a long-overdue step by the NHS to align pay and grading with actual skills and knowledge. For years, we’ve been encouraged to take on new responsibilities and undertake degree-level modules with the promise of career progression - yet that progression did not materialise.”

Diane led a grouped application for her and 11 colleagues in her community support team, three of whom have received their outcomes so far.

She continued: “I completed the 75-question re-banding form and shared with my colleagues to add their input based on their own skills and experiences. My manager was very supportive throughout the process, and the application was submitted to the board.”

When Diane heard back, she learned that her application had been successful, and she was upgraded to Band 6.

"When I received the news that I had been successful, I was thrilled—not only because of the potential salary increase, but because it validated the work I do and the skills I bring to the role.

“There have been mixed feelings among staff in the workplace, but ultimately, this is about uplifting the profession as a whole. Change takes time, and addressing all bandings fairly will be a gradual process. We need to work together to achieve this shared goal.”
