27 Mar 2026

University of Southampton student nurse Mary Bichard (who was born in Jersey) has been recognised with a top honour by the Royal College of Nursing in its 2026 Awards, which celebrate the very best in nursing.

South East member Mary Bichard wins RCN award

Mary, who is studying MNurs Adult and Child at the University of Southampton, is the winner of the 'Student Ambassador of the Year' category.

This award honours RCN Student Ambassadors who have made a difference at their university and shown outstanding commitment to the RCN and its members, especially student members.

Ellen McNicholas, RCN South East Regional Director, said: “My heartfelt congratulations to Mary on receiving this award. Colleagues who nominated her said that Mary is one of the reasons that the South East has a strong student voice as she encourages others to get involved in the RCN.

"At university she has consistently held a role on the nursing society committee and has welcomed new students into the society.”

Mary said: “I am very grateful and surprised by the award from the College for the work I have been able to do over the last three years. Most of all, I want to say thank you to all the RCN staff and members who have supported me in the work I have engaged in.

"Furthermore, thank you to my academics. I hope what I have done has made life a little easier for nursing and allied health professional students who work so hard to become confident practitioners.”

Mary was presented with her award at the RCN Awards ceremony in London.
