A nurse working in Cambridgeshire, who has shaped guidance to help women experiencing pregnancy loss, has been honoured with a major nursing award.

Emma Ayling, who works at the Rosie Hospital in Cambridge, has been recognised for her contribution at the Royal College of Nursing Awards, being named RCN Forum Member of the Year.

The RCN forums are groups of RCN members who work or have an interest in a particular area of professional nursing practice. There are currently more than 30 forums.

Emma is a member of the RCN’s Women’s Health Forum, where she has used her clinical leadership skills to raise awareness of the impact of pregnancy loss, as well as contributing to the RCN’s pregnancy loss guidance to ensure it is evidence-based and compassionate.

She also represented the RCN at the All-Party Parliamentary Group on ovarian cancer, making sure the voice of nursing could help shape national policy.

In the nomination, Emma was praised for her unwavering support for colleagues and being quick to volunteer, whether by leading gynaecology webinars, developing guidance, representing the RCN, supporting events or mentoring peers.

Emma said: “Being selected as RCN Forum Member of the Year was an unexpected and deeply humbling honour. The true privilege is championing women’s health alongside dedicated colleagues, and supporting women through every stage of life — especially in early pregnancy care — with compassion during some of their most vulnerable moments.

"This recognition reminds me that the heart of what matters most lies in standing beside women when they need it most, advocating for their health, their voices and their care.”

Paul Morris, RCN Eastern Regional Director, said: “It is clear from the words of her colleagues that Emma has demonstrated remarkable compassion, professionalism and a deep understanding of women’s health.

“By being so willing to share this knowledge with the wider profession and others she demonstrates her commitment to improving care for patients and empowering others. She is a very deserving winner of this award.”
