Nurses at Grimsby Hospital, part of the Northern Lincolnshire And Goole NHS Foundation Trust have had eggs thrown at them while returning to their car after a finishing shift.

According to the the Trust this is not the first time it has happened.

RCN Regional Director for Yorkshire & the Humber Sarah Dodsworth said:

“It is both shocking and saddening to hear that nurses have had eggs thrown at them whilst at work. It’s even more disturbing that this is just the latest in a series of similar attacks on hospital staff.

“This behaviour is completely unacceptable.

“Nursing staff work day in and day out providing professional care to their patients – often while overstretched and under‑resourced. They do not, and should not, expect to be abused or attacked at work.

“The most recent NHS staff survey (March 2025) revealed alarming results: nationally, 35% of employees reported ongoing physical and verbal abuse, bullying and discrimination from patients, relatives and members of the public. Particularly concerning is the rise in harassment and violence towards nurses and midwives.

“It is vital that there is zero tolerance for this kind of behaviour, whether at Grimsby or anywhere else.

“The Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust must work closely with Humberside Police to identify and prosecute those responsible. The safety and security of staff, both inside hospital buildings and on surrounding grounds, must be taken seriously.”

It is understood that the Trust’s security team is working with Humberside Police to trace those responsible, and the police have confirmed that patrols in the area will be increased.
