Given in celebration of the very best in nursing, the annual RCN Awards took place at Congress this week in Liverpool and were awarded to those who have given an outstanding contribution to nursing, along with honours for the Learning Representative, Safety Representative and Steward of the Year. The Award of Merit recognises those who have gone above and beyond to support fellow members.

Anne has been a registered nurse since 1977, with over 45 years’ experience working in front-line NHS services. Anne’s career has included patient-focused roles at Leeds General Infirmary, before her move to The York Hospital where Anne has worked as a bed/duty manager for many years.

Anne has been an accredited RCN steward for over 20 years and represented Yorkshire & the Humber on the RCN UK Stewards Committee from 2016 to 2020. She has also previously served as a member of the RCN Trade Union Committee from 2016 to 2019, as a member of the RCN Yorkshire & the Humber Board and as Chair and Vice-Chair of the RCN North Yorkshire Branch.

As an RCN Steward Anne represents members, helps to resolve workplace issues or disputes and represents staff in workplace consultations.

Sarah Dodsworth, Regional Director for RCN Yorkshire and the Humber said:

“The RCN Awards are presented to those who have made an outstanding contribution to nursing, either in their area of professional practice or in their support of their peers and colleagues.

“Anne’s commitment and dedication to nursing and to the RCN has been evident throughout her long career. Anne is always kind and considerate to all, yet her calm, sensible and focused approach to achieving resolutions is a real credit to her.

“Anne is a deserving recipient of the Award of Merit and we in the region could not be prouder.”

Award of Merit recipient Anne Penny said:

“I am honoured to receive this award and recognition from the RCN. It’s been a privilege supporting colleagues in York, as well as across the wider RCN.”
