Health Visitor Team Leaders in Glasgow vote to take strike action

29 May 2026

Members working as health visitor team leaders in Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership send unequivocal message to employer.

NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde RCN members in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde have voted overwhelmingly to take industrial action.

A small group of members who are health visitor team leaders are in dispute with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde over the health board’s failure to evaluate their jobs based on a new, agreed job description.

In a statutory ballot 93% of those who voted said they would take industrial action, including strike action. The result shows just how strongly they feel over the way they have been treated by the health board.

A statutory ballot is a legal requirement before industrial action can take place.

We will now consider the next steps in the dispute.

Commenting on the result of the statutory ballot, Philip Coghill, Head of Pay, Terms and Conditions, said:

“Industrial action is always a last resort but make no mistake, our members have overwhelmingly indicated they are willing to stand up for their rights and withdraw their labour.

“Once again, throughout this dispute, as with our district nurses last year, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has had many opportunities to do the right thing for its health visitor team leaders. But once again it has failed to follow the nationally-agreed job evaluation processes, despite a new job description having been agreed between the trade unions and employer July 2025. And once again our members clearly feel they have been left with no choice.

“RCN Scotland Board, RCN Trade Union Committee and RCN Council will consider the next steps and in the meantime, the dispute remains ongoing.

“We will continue to support and represent our members affected by this dispute. The health board can avoid a strike by respecting the nationally-agreed process, evaluating their job description and respecting the outcome.”
