How we're advocating for a sustainable future for nursing

Sheilabye Sobrany 26 Jan 2024

In this month’s blog, RCN President Sheila Sobrany considers what we’ve learnt in worrying new trends in the profession and shares what we’re doing to try and turn things around.

I hope everyone has had a good start to the year. February may be the shortest month, but there’s been plenty going on and we’ve not wasted any time campaigning for you and your patients.

This month we’ve seen the release of yet more deeply concerning statistics , showing, once again, where over a decade of undervaluing and underinvesting in nursing leads us.

Just last week, new data from UCAS revealed a 25% collapse in applicants for nursing courses in across the UK over the past two years.

It’s no secret why we’re seeing such a sharp drop; the increase in the cost of living for students and the serious debt burden for nursing courses leaves many struggling to make ends meet.
