Learning the beauty of art during Black History Month

RCN member, Aghogho, talks about attending the RCN Eastern region's event celebrating Black History Month.

I attended the recent Eastern region event celebrating Black History Month (BHM) at the venue Firstsite in Colchester. The afternoon included a guided tour by the artist EVEWRIGHT of his solo exhibition entitled Libation, which explores the themes of migration, identity, race, class and journeys.

This event was the first in person RCN Eastern region event I have attended and I was really excited about it. I was determined to be there even though I had to travel a long way. It was well worth the three-hour return trip to Colchester and I had a lovely day.

Having the artist explain his work was amazing, enlightening and impressive. It also brought back many reminiscences. The part of the exhibition which made the biggest impression on me was where it spoke about the determination of the black people who came, saw and conquered despite the obstacles.

I really felt the exhibition succeeded in its aim to explore what it means to be Black and British. I do believe, however, in this respect there is still a lot that needs to be done regarding equality.

The highlight of the day was the exhibition. On my long journey home, thinking about what I had seen, I realised I had learned the beauty of art.
