"Seeing vulnerable people treated without dignity and respect made me determined to complete my nurse training"

Sam Preston 21 Jun 2023

Sam Preston, Lead Nurse for Independent Health and Social Care for the East Midlands, discusses how her career in nursing led her to the RCN and why improving patients’ experiences has always been at the heart of her work.

My journey into health and social care began at age 16, when I started work as a care assistant in a local nursing home whilst studying for a Diploma in social care. Unfortunately, my experiences at the home were not all positive. Seeing vulnerable people treated without dignity and respect made me determined to complete my nurse training so I could help shape and improve people’s health and social care journeys.

For five years after completing training, I worked in surgical wards and intensive care within the NHS. I then made the transition into the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry as a clinical education specialist for twelve years. I worked collaboratively with NHS teams, delivering training and building relationships that changed clinical practice for the better. I strived for better infection control, made high risk procedures safer and ensured the survival of neonates smaller than my hand.

I returned to social care eight years ago, bringing my clinical skills and teaching experience to the Royal British Legion care homes – firstly as a practice development facilitator, and then as a nursing and residential manager. Nursing and supporting my team through the pandemic was one of the most challenging and rewarding periods of my career.

I have been an RCN member throughout my career and have utilised the college’s expertise for professional development and employment relations on many occasions. The role of the Lead Nurse for Independent Health and Social Care (IHSC) was brought to my attention by a member of my professional network, who insisted I apply. I knew I had the passion, experience and determination required to help give our members from IHSC a voice.

One issue which I’m particularly focused on at the moment is working with agency workers to highlight their specific challenges, so we can better tailor communication and education to support their professional requirements more robustly. I also share a passion with my local IHSC Reps for empowering our internationally educated members. We are currently planning a programme of work to support these members in forming networks and holding learning events to develop excellence in their diverse areas of practice.

I have enjoyed collaborating with my IHSC Lead Nurse colleagues. Together, we have been working to build relationships with external stakeholders in our regions, providing a more comprehensive response to local employers and our members within their teams. I have also utilised my training background and produced a guide to help new IHSC Lead Nurses in my team to navigate their induction more strategically and efficiently.

I look forward to engaging further with all our IHSC members, and I am keen to hear from you directly. Please email me at samantha.preston@rcn.org.uk to let me know how I can create a more inclusive membership offering that serves your unique needs and professional aspirations.
