Caring can take its toll and sometimes carers need caring for too. Come and hear what support is available from the Laura Hyde Foundation and why it's so crucial to stop the silence around suicide among health workers.
The Laura Hyde Foundation is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to improving the mental health of our emergency services and medical workers.
Liam Barnes, Laura Hyde Foundation Trustee Chair, is joining this event to give a talk about the services the foundation provides, how they can support nursing professionals undergoing mental health challenges and, crucially, why it's so important to stop the silence around suicide.
Heath care professionals' suicide rate is 24% higher than the national average. Past research shows that if people affected by suicide receive support early on, it can help them process their loss and reduce the risk of further mental health problems and suicide later on. This type of rapid support is called 'postvention'. As suicide bereavement is a risk factor for suicide itself, it is vitally important to spread the message about the effectiveness of postvention as a policy following the death by suicide of a colleague working in health care.
Come and learn about the foundation's work and be part of the de-stigmatisation of the profoundly important issues it deals with.
This is also an opportunity to meet your Somerset branch executive team as well as your RCN South West staff team and discuss matters that are important to you in your workplace, whatever they are.
