My First Death: Dying well in prison settings

An online talk bringing together nursing, healthcare and prison staff to discuss death in relation to patients in custody.
Everyone deserves a dignified death. But, in custody settings, not all prisoners get the chance to die well. This event, in Dying Matters Awareness Week, brings together nursing, healthcare and prison staff to tell the story of the first patient death they experienced in custody. By bringing out the human stories behind the prison walls we see the patient behind each prisoner.

Speakers: Deanna Mezen is an advanced clinical nurse practitioner with research experience on palliative care and dying in prison. She is an advocate for ensuring that prisoners are awarded the dignity of dying in peace and comfort, where they wish to be. Elizabeth Tysoe is a registered nurse with over 40 years’ experience. She has held various senior management positions in the NHS, the Prison Service and the Inspectorate of Prisons as well as the General Medical Council. She was the first nurse to hold the position of Head of Health Inspection at HMIP and was awarded an OBE for services to Offender Health in the 2015 New Year Honours list. Additional speakers from a range of prison healthcare settings.
