Join fellow RCN members for a hybrid embroidery workshop.
In this 1 hour hybrid workshop, embroidery artist Nigel Cheney will introduce you to the creative possibilities of stitching and embellishing onto a postcard. Using historic photographs from the RCN Archive, this is an opportunity to celebrate the contribution made by nurses by producing your own unique artwork. Handicrafts have long been proven to be helpful as art of relaxation or mindful exercises. The skills are simple and easy to learn but can be powerful and effective.
Using the prompt ‘cherish’ we will explore how these black and white postcards will be brought to life with colour, thread and beads to create an artwork that you will want to cherish.
This family friendly workshop is suitable for anyone able to safely hold a needle in their hands and is designed for everyone from the complete novice, who needs help threading a needle, to the most experienced of crafts people.
This is a hybrid event. All materials are provided and we will send out packs to online participants on a first come first serve basis. If you receive a pack, please try your best to attend as our materials are limited.
This is an event for RCN members only.

Nigel Cheney is an embroiderer who lives and works in Market Harborough, Leicestershire.
His work deals with memory and narrative, through complex visual metaphors and plays upon literature, history and fables. His work explores the tensions between the handmade and digital technologies. Images are often digitally manipulated and combined to develop compositions that are printed onto fabric before stitching onto previously loved textiles. He enjoys the contradictions between unwanted textiles and detailed hand stitch.
His work has exhibited widely throughout Europe, has won numerous awards and is in a number of International collections.
With extensive experience in Education and Industry he held the position of Lecturer in Embroidered Textiles at National College of Art and Design, Dublin, Ireland for over 20 years before retiring to live in his native Harborough 8 years ago.
